Badel 1862 is the largets and oldest producer of wines and spirits in Croatia.

With the quality of our products we continue on and enrich our opulent tradition that was inherited from renowned companies such as Pokorny, Patria, Arko and Badel Vinoprodukt.

We are a synonym for spirit drinks in Croatia and the wider region and with five wineries within our portfolio we interlace the entire wealth of wine regions in Croatia.

In addition to our own production, we are exclusive distributors for world known producers of spirit drinks such as Tradall, Marie Brizard, Borco and Underberg.

History
  • 1862.

    The first Zagreb liquor factory (Mihić i Sabljić) is established and bought by Franjo Pokorny who then starts his “Franjo Pokorny” factory, a royal privileged listed liquor factory of Croatian fruit distillates and vinegar.

    This exceptional entrepreneur and author of famous Pelinkovac soon expands his business into multiple European markets and thanks to the exceptional quality of the product, it is enjoyed even in the French court of Napoleon 3rd. Soon, the production of Lavov and Sljivovica starts…

  • 1867.

    The entrepreneur and merchant Mijo Arko establishes the „Arko“ factory, equipped with the most modern technologyused for the production of alcoholic drinks, cognacs, sparkling wines, brandy and liqueurs.

  • 1886.

    Zagreb gets a new factory called “Patria”, a distillery of brandy and fine liqueurs which conquers the market with its high quality products among which the most prominent one is Patria brandy medicinal, sold in pharmacies and known today as the famous Badel brand(y).

  • 1928.

    A.A. Baker & Co joint stock company starts its business as a regional office for tea and rum import and in the same year opens its headquarters in London.

  • 1947.

    After World War 2, the distilleries Patria, Pokorny and Baker join together to form “Zagrebačka tvornica likera i vina” (Zagreb factory of liqueurs and wines). Two years later Zagrebačka tvornica likera and Plemenika (former Arko) form together a new enterprise Tvornica likera i vinarstvo (Factory of liqueurs and winery).

  • 1950.

    The factory gets its name “Marijan Badel”, indrustry of liqueurs and refinery after a folk hero and son of distillery and vinegar factory Braća Badel (Badel Brothers).

  • 1967.

    The factory begins its development of wine programme by merging with Vinoplod enterprise and enriches its wine palette by integrating with Vinoprodukt company nine years later (Badel-Vinoprodukt).

  • 1979.

    The Factory changes its name to “Radna organizacija Badel” (Badel Labor organization). It counts 2800 workers with a production of 43 million litres of spirits, 31 million litres of wine, 22 million litres of non-alcoholic drinks, 98 million litres of sparkling water as well as mineral water based beverages and 12 million litres of vinegar.

  • 1989.

    Badel Labor organization restructures itself as four social enterprises (Badel-Vinoprodukt, Industrija vrenja Sesvete, Badel BAP and Badel Jamnica) which will together form Složeno poduzeće Badel (Badel complex enterprise).

  • 1991.

    Badel and Badel Vinoprodukt form a new company - Badel 1862 d.o.o. The new company adds the year of establishment into its name, that way honouring its forebearers and unambiguously defines itself as a house of long tradition.

  • 2003.

    Badel 1862’s stocks are listed in the Stock market.

  • 2004.

    In the untouched nature of Apatovac village, a place where back in 1842 water exploitation had begun, Kalničke vode d.d. is built. The most contemporary factory in Croatia by highest eco standards produces Kapljice sparkling water and Unique natural spring water. The factory worked within Badel 1862’s composition until 2010.

  • 2006.

    Eurobev d.o.o. (a company that produces fruit juices, nectars and syrup as well as fizzy and mild refreshing non-alcoholic drinks) begins to act as a part of Badel Grupa (Badel Group). By 2011 this company will have been integrated into Badel 1862’s system and it will remain there until 2015.

BADEL 1862 follows the model of social responsibility which consists caring for employees, training of employees, encouraging responsible consumption of beverage, as well as environmental protection and care for the community and partners.

Responsible alcohol consumption under the slogan “Drink less, but of the best”!

Drinking alcohol is part of a socially and culturally acceptable ways of functioning in communities around the world for centuries. That pleasure is accepted as part of a balanced lifestyle by millions of people in the world.

Badel 1862 as a leader in the production and placement of spirits and wines on the market. We are especially proud on the quality of long-term brands that reflect the long tradition of production and cultural heritage of Croatia transformed into a world-class products that Badel placed on the market and which carry a positive atmosphere in social situations, in moments of relaxation, enjoyment, at gatherings and celebrations. But at the same time, we are very much aware of the dangers and social consequences of excessive consumption and alcohol abuse. Neither of the extreme is good.

Excessive consumption of alcohol harm to individuals, their families, the community in which they work and also to us as responsible producers. In short, alcoholism is a bad habit. As a responsible company, we decided to take a responsible and active role in society. We want consumers to be the beneficiaries of controlled amounts, on special occasions and not sit behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. We support unreservedly all prevention programs developed in order to prevent alcohol abuse. Therefore, our actions embody the slogan of responsible consumption and enjoyment at every opportunity: DRINK LESS, DRINK EXCELLENT!

Quality

By continuous investments in new production technologies, implementing quality management systems, health care and safety, organizational changes, systematic informing and employee education, significant results have been achieved in accomplishing continuous products and processes quality.

The very motto of BADEL 1862 “Drink less, but of the best!” communicates responsible consumption of quality products suggesting to consumers that “less is good”. It is exactly that quality that is recognized by numerous awards and acknowledgement received by our products and BADEL 1862 itself. BADEL 1862 was three times awarded with the City of Zagreb Award, last time in 2006.

The Croatian Chamber of Economy grants the certificates “Croatian Creation” and “Croatian Quality” for products guaranteeing consumers that these products and services represent the very peak of worldwide offer in their class.

Throughout its history BADEL 1862 won numerous awards on fairs and competitions in Croatia and worldwide. The first prize ever awarded for a product from a producer whose tradition BADEL 1862 continues is the Silver Medal awarded to Pokorny for his liqueur Gorki Pelinkovac at World’s Fair held in Paris 1867. Monde Selection, the world’s most prestigious quality selection institute based in Bruxelles, awarded the liqueur Cherry Brandy with the Grand Gold Medal with Palm Leaves in 1982.
